The Project
The latest of my designs was a cover for stove knobs with larger icons and numbers than the original.
This design was based on the request of an elderly person with declining eyesight. The aspects of the design were based on his specific requirements and capabilities.
II decided to make a cover instead of an entirely new button, so that the act of turning it would be familiar, as well as significantly reduced complexity and adjustability of the design. While there is a wide range of knobs on different stoves, this cover should be adaptable to most knobs of the same shape. Only having to adjust for the shape of the hole and placement of the numbers. As well as keeping the surrounding tolerances in mind.
I experimented with using different section colours and other methods to aid in visibility. Such as having red to signal hot/danger. However, the user it was created for responded best to plain black on white, like the original.
I created the design in Maya, using an original stove knob for measurements and placement of the different icons.
The cover was then printed on a personal P1P printer from Bambu Labs, using their software to slice the design. I have not yet had the opportunity to publish this project.
